In the paleontology world, fossils are everything. They provide scientists with most of the information they need. Fossils are like a window to the past, all we have to do is figure out the ancient language to unlock their secrets. Examining a fossil is like travelling back in time.

Back before people understood about Paleontology, they reacted very strangely when they found a fossil. Some people took them for the bones of giants, and scary legends appeared about giant people who lived in caves and ate children. Other people took them for the bones of great dragons. Sometimes they ground them up to put in medicines. It wasn't until the 1800's that people began to realize what fossils really were. It was realized that great creatures may have roamed the Earth long before humans. After that, Paleontologists have studied them ever since.

We owe lots to those little scraps of rocks that have managed to overcome time itself in order to be here today. Millions of dollars are spent each year to collect them, and even more to study them. In this section of the site, I will explain the miracle of fossilization. I will also tell you a bit about fossil collecting as a hobby, and how to get started. I just love the feeling I get when I hold a fossil in my hand, knowing that it was once a living creature, and that it has seen millions of years go by. Yep, we owe a lot to those wonderful rocks.
